Mr. Schwartz has been an active artist for over 50 years. He attended the prestigious Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles California, after his time in the Air Force.

In 1971, Walter T. Foster asked Don to do a book for him titled, "Horse Heads in Oil and Pastels", which has sold over half a million copies world wide. In the 1980's he was invited to Japan by a young Japanese couple, as their guest, to paint several race horses for their clients.

Throughout his career he has been commissioned by many notable people to paint horses and scenes for them. To name a few: Desi Arnez, Dick Van Dyke, Mrs. Paul Getty and six paintings for William Shatner.

As a member of the A.A.E.A. (the American Academy of Equine Artists), his painting "No Parking Del Mar" was voted Best of Show at the Camden, South Carolina Invitational Art Show.

In 1991 the Del Mar National Horse Show commissioned Don to do a head sculpture in bronze of "Juniperus" for the Hap Hansen Perpetual trophy.

Don was commissioned by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club to paint two of the $1,000,000.00, winners of the Del Mar Pacific Classic, "Tinners Way" and "General Challenge".

Don also did the retirement painting of "John Henry", the world’s top winning race horse at that time.

Four paintings were commissioned by Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Jones, among the leading race horse owners and breeders. [“Lemhi Gold", "Tiffany Lass", "Riboletta" and "Forrestry".]

These are just a few of the hundreds of horse portraits he has done.
